National Vaccination in PPD workshop

On Thursday 14^th March the Health and Justice teams at UKHSA and NHSE ran a national workshop focusing on vaccination in PPDs. We had a great turnout with around 50 participants attending from a variety of organisations including NHS trusts and those with lived experience. Among the expert speakers were Dr. Julie Yates, the head of vaccine operations at UKHSA and Femi Laryea-Adekimi from the Prison Reform Trust. The workshop highlighted the breadth of work currently ongoing at the UKHSA and NHSE and it was an opportunity to highlight the genuine desire each organisation has to engage with stakeholders, especially those with lived experience. Breakout rooms and subsequent discussions provided the opportunity for participants to share their experiences and bring ideas to the forefront of national conversations. Some examples of these fruitful discussions which UKHSA and NHSE look forward to progressing include:

The value of coproduction and how to nurture trust between individuals and organisations
How to communicate with different groups and how this may differ to communicating with the general population
Making every contact count
Increasing access to healthcare whilst in prison.

We hope that participants found the event enjoyable and informative, and we look forward to running similar events in the future.

Measles- A webinar to update teams working in secure settings

In the UK, there is a growing number of people who have no immunity to measles as they have not received two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. More recently, vaccination levels for MMR have fallen to the lowest level in a decade. Due to low vaccination uptake, there is a risk of measles outbreaks occurring in closed settings such as prisons and places of detention.

The aim of this webinar is to raise awareness of measles including the signs and symptoms, transmission, vaccination and the practical actions to take if someone has suspected or confirmed measles in a secure settings. This webinar was delivered by UKHSA, with contributions from NHS England and HMPPS.

Research involving prisons webinar

This event organised by the Instituto de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Porto (ISPUP) under the University of Porto, which aims to contribute to the development, application and dissemination of new knowledge in the field of public health, in order to improve and protect the health for all. Among other contributions, the webinar featured a presentation on the WHO Health in Prisons Programme.

Workshop - Prison health at the time of COVID-19: the impact of response measures on health and healthcare for people in detention in Europe

The COVID-19 pandemic calls on us to focus on the principle “prison health is public health” in order to protect the well-being of people in prison and the surrounding community, uphold equity and continuity of care whilst

keeping a secure and safe environment. WHO, University of Pisa, EMCDDA organised a workshop at the 14th European Public Health Conference 2021, ‘Public health futures in a changing world’, a virtual event that took place from 10 – 12 November 2021 https://ephconference.eu/. The workshop, ‘Prison health at the time of COVID-19: the impact of response measures on health and healthcare for people in detention in Europe’, examined COVID-19 prevention and control interventions implemented in prison settings across Europe, and analysed their impact on SARS-CoV2 transmission, mental health of people in prison, including drug use disorders and provision of health interventions. WHO Europe Webinar - Prevention and control of COVID-19 in prisons: What have we learned? 21 July 2020

The primary purpose of this webinar was to present the WHO interim guidance on preparedness, prevention and control of COVID 19 in prisons and other places of detention, highlighting its purpose, its main areas of applicability and most recent updates The webinar also shares differnt countries experiences gained from the pandemic and presents the surveillance system developed jointly by WHO/ECDC.

A Seven Country Report on COVID-19 in prisons

On May 7, 2020 a discussion with leaders in Ghana, Guyana, Kenya, Jamaica, Malawi, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago was recorded on the steps that have been and/or need to be taken to protect children and adults detained in police lockups, remand centres and correctional centres as the pandemic spread in their countries.

Welcome to the first WEPHREN webinar which took place on the 12^th July 2019 to celebrate the 2^nd Anniversary of WEPHREN.

The webinar broadcasted the Alex Gatherer Memorial Lecture live from London, England and from the University of New Mexico in the USA. The theme for the webinar was involving people in prison in the development of prison health services and Professor Karla Thornton and her colleagues presented on the work they have done on identifying people with Hepatitis C and supporting their treatment and management using Project ECHO, as well as their innovative peer mentoring programme for health improvement.

The webinar was well attended and had a wide global audience, with participants from all continents across the world.

It was chaired by Sunita Sturup-Toft from the UK Collaborating Centre for the Health In Prisons Programme with presentations from Dr Eamonn O’Moore, Professor Karla Thornton, Daniel Rowan, Carissa McGee, Saul Hernandez and Dr Emma Plugge. Thanks go to Louise Southalan, current chair of the WEPHREN Steering Committee for fielding questions for the speakers and The Global Health Network for their ongoing support in developing WEPHREN as a community of practice.

During the webinar, there was an announcement that Northern Ireland is commencing its 3rd year of Project ECHO in September, looking at reducing self-harm and suicide in the prison setting by localised adaptation of the UK Alliance Towards Zero Suicide Strategy.

The Northern Ireland ECHO is an inter organisational network including people in custody promoting a whole prison approach to wellbeing and would like to invite other prisons around the world to join them, as Spokes, at our ECHO sessions (1.5hrs) monthly using Zoom.

The training and curriculum setting session for this year’s project is Friday 27th September in the morning. Any Spokes will need to have Zoom downloaded and a camera on their computer or use a tablet. The team in Northern Ireland can help with any IT issues before the training day.
